For the creation of this I used Michele Botticelli‘s ‘City of Arkham’ 3D buildings pack among other things. Render + matte painting and post processing.

This digital art piece was inspired by a short story from Thomas Ligotti’s ‘Teatro Grottesco‘. The name of the story is ‘His Shadow Shall Rise to a Higher House’ and it’s the first part of a trilogy called ‘In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land’.

Although the story is pretty grim and sickening, it contains some vivid descriptions of the urban landscape of the unnamed northern border town which I found beautiful. (more…)

Concept art based on “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward”, H.P. Lovecraft’s novel.
It looks more like an old English town, but that is where my imagination took me after reading the beautiful description.
“One of the child’s first memories was of the great westward sea of hazy roofs and domes and steeples and far hills which he saw one winter afternoon from that great railed embankment, all violet and mystic against a fevered, apocalyptic sunset of reds and golds and purples and curious greens. The vast marble dome of the State House stood out in massive silhouette, its crowning statue haloed fantastically by a break in one of the tinted stratus clouds that barred the flaming sky. […]
His walks were always adventures in antiquity, during which he managed to recapture from the myriad relics of a glamorous old city a vivid and connected picture of the centuries before.
